PEACE....?....!

"A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history."
~Ghandi

"One day we must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but that it is a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means."
-- Martin Luther King, Jr.

"What is the POINT of another Peace march?"
I have been asked this question in various forms over the last few months, ever since I started telling people about the World March for Peace and Non Violence. Although the question has been phrased many different ways, the real questions people seem to have are: "What is the use of trying to change the way things are?" And "What makes you think you can do anything about it?"
I am an artist. I am not a political person. In general, I would rather sing about the human experience or dance than discuss, ponder or participate in politics. But I am a big believer in personal responsibility and "being the change you want to see in the world."
I've focused on mindfulness; initiating change in small ways- random acts of kindness for strangers, practicing peace in my own sphere of influence by resolving conflicts in loving ways. I never felt the need to join groups or carry signs, and never really felt like my getting involved in such activities would make any positive difference in the world.
Until now.
A few months ago, I went to a meeting that unexpectedly changed my life.
I went to the meeting with a friend, knowing nothing about it (we were going swing dancing afterwards, and I was far more focused on that than where we were going beforehand!)
But at this meeting, there was a core group of passionate people who were taking on a monumental task with hope and faith that everything would come together to make their project a success. That was how I discovered the World March for Peace and Non-Violence. I volunteered to get involved with this wonderful project by throwing a small dance event to help raise funds and before I knew it, I became one of the Orange County Organizers...! So what was it that inspired me to participate?
This is the first World March to circle the earth calling for the end of war and nuclear arms, and the elimination of violence of all kinds. It has been endorsed by leaders of nations, philanthropists and celebrities all over the planet.
But all that, as impressive as it is, could just be a flash in the pan, a momentary blip in the collective attention span of our easily underwhelmed society. Through history, many communities have marched to bring awareness to their needs, rights and demands. Some have found to their dismay, that the very people they are trying to persuade are more than happy to observe and then walk away unchanged. What makes this March different is that it is not isolated to one place, one demographic, one topic.
This March will last 90 days and pass through all climates and seasons. It began on New Zealand on October 2, 2009, the anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, declared the “International Day of Non-Violence” by the United Nations. It will conclude in the Andes Mountains (Punta de Vacas, Aconcagua, Argentina) on January 2, 2010. The WMFPNV involves EVERY community and individual that has a desire to address Peace issues in the place they live.
The more I talked with the people behind this March, the more I realized how much we need something like this right now. Grand gestures are easily forgotten, but relationships change us forever. The team of Marchers goes wherever they are invited and gets communities dialoguing about their own peace issues. Some communities are experienceing inter-racial or religious violence. Some nations are in the middle of civil wars. Some communities still struggle with sexual oppression. In whatever place the March visits, the team will attend and participate in forums, meetings and festivals organized by the local individuals and groups who request their presence!
To create global awareness - as has already happened with environmental issues - of the urgent need to condemn all forms of violence and bring about real peace, everyone must get involved!
The backbone of the march will be the route through 90 countries, but the heart and body will be the thousands of local initiatives developed at each point along the way. These initiatives will vary in form and size (e.g., a concert with thousands of people, a university symposium on economic violence, a community forum on discrimination against immigrants, a workshop on civil disobedience, a theater or dance piece that expresses the hope for a violence-free future, seminars with school children on conflict resolution, a neighborhood potluck for peace, street actions, art exhibits, etc.) Participants will organize forums, meetings, festivals, conferences, and events (sports, cultural, social, musical, artistic, facilitate meetings and educational, etc.), depending on their own creative initiative. Hundreds of projects have already been set in motion by different individuals and organizations.
This "facilitation" approach hopes to merge the wills of people everywhere and create a global conversation. The ultimate intention of the March is to achieve global Peace via the eradication of nuclear weapons; the progressive and proportional reduction of non-nuclear arms; the signing of non-aggression treaties among nations; and the renunciation by governments of war as a way to resolve conflicts, as well as creating bridges in communities currently divided amongst themselves.
The march will be successful according to its ability to reach the billions of people worldwide who are yearning for an end to the violence.
These goals take time, and will not be reached simply by one march or one seminar.
You can help by talking about the march with your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, fellow students, and total strangers.
This is a powerfully positive project, and I sincerely hope you will find an authentic way to get involved.
Most of you already know I've been talking about almost nothing but Peace events for the last few weeks ... and now you know why! So what am I doing besides talking?
The World March Team will be arriving in LA in December for ONE DAY. As the Orange County section of the LA/OC Welcoming Committee, Alec Marken and I are trying to create as much awareness about the March and its objectives before the arrival of the team as we can. Time is so short, and we have so little time to actually spend with the Marchers when they arrive, so we are doing all we can to get people involved.
Each event we hold has two purposes: to raise awareness about the March itself, and thus bring people's awareness to peaceful living, and to raise funds to support the arrival of the World Marchers in LA in December (providing food/lodging/transportation to forums, etc).
Because the main event is the arrival of the Marchers, and because we only have one day with them, we really are depending heavily on fundraising events to achieve both purposes. So far, we have 4 main events: one already past, (Bands and Bellies 1), Bands and Bellies 2 coming up on Nov 22, a bellydance show on November 29th at Merry's Fashion with Passion in Long Beach, and a symbolic peace march/celebration concert on the day the marchers arrive at Immanuel Presbyterian in LA (site of many civil rights marches)
Bands and Bellies was our first OC support event (featuring local bands and professional bellydancers) and it was marvelous success.
So many people volunteered their time, energy and creativity to the event, and many more are already stepping up for future events. To those of you have already gotten involved, I just cannot tell you how much I appreciate all your help!!
To those of you just hearing about this or who feel hesitant to get involved, let me just say that this is the ONLY World March planned, and it will only succeed in its objectives if people the world over become part of the solution rather than expecting someone else to fix everything. As someone once said "Don't wait for the government to step up, or think that 'they' will take care of it. Who are 'they?' There is no 'they!' There is only us- it has to be us!"*
If you can do nothing else, tell people about what we are doing and practice peace in your own life!
ANYTHING you can do to create peace makes life better for everyone!

newest developments

Hello fabulous people!
So you know how in my last post I said there was a lot more to share? I have owed you all a personal update for a while now, and here it is. Grab a cuppa tea and settle in, 'cause it's a long one! Along with all the "normal" stuff I do (ya know, working 40 hours etc.), I have been focusing heavily on filling each day with ART: dance, music, etc.
As you might remember, I'm in a Tribal Dance troupe called Ban-Dal. Our intrepid leader moved to Arizona (WAH!), so we've been pretty quiet lately in the dance world. Without my dance buddies, I have been driven to do more solo work because I gotta dance! These last several months have been really educational and full of discoveries about myself as a dancer and as a person, and this new focus has also created opportunities. After a recent show, I was asked to teach Tribal Fusion at a local women's fitness studio. So now I am teaching dance in 2 locations. (I’m still teaching bellydance basics at the YMCA.) I have also been offered an additional class at the studio! Teaching constantly challenges me to reach my highest potential as an artist, while simultaneously demanding that I draw from my students their own latent abilities so they can discover their unique paths... a privilege, indeed! And the community of students and fellow teachers is so delightfully, richly varied.*Many of you have recently heard me mention The "Art Bomb" in some context or other... let me explain what I mean. *Art is everywhere in my world right now, and I am meeting life-altering, deep, authentic, grounded, inspiring people everywhere I go, and connecting through them to even more opportunities for personal growth .. and I am finding art around every corner ...this is the "art bomb!" that has gone off in my world. I believe that art does not imitate life, but rather that life and art are inextricably linked- one and the same thing. Integration and connection are at the heart of my dancing and music-making, if not all the art I have experienced.I think getting involved in Astra lit the fuse of the "A.B." When I auditioned, I just knew without a doubt that something special was going to happen, and I HAD to be part of this project. Well, from the moment I found out I had the role I wanted, life just exploded into tangible ripples of Creativity, Beauty and Joy all around me and they are really rippling back to me as well. Honestly....... my head is spinning!Still with me? Good! Hang in there - we are getting to the really wild stuff now!!Example: in response to a spontaneous invitation from a wonderful friend,(Alec.. more on him later) I ended up busking (street-singing) in Laguna Beach with a Lithuanian world-traveler/musician/social activist named Hokshila, which led to an invitation to join Alec's band! The band, DEEP STIRRINGS, is a completely serendipitous ensemble of talented and marvelous musicians led by Alec C. Marken. (The aforementioned non-Lithuanian friend).
Alec is a Musician/Poet/Dancer/Instructor/Songwriter/ Choreographer/Actor who was the lead male dancer in the recent production of ASTRA that I've been talking about for the last few months.Alec and the band have been playing local festivals and other nifty venues for a while now, and after one jam session with the guys, it was clear I belonged!Since joining as a vocalist, we have performed at the Neighborhood Cup (where Alec & Co are regular guest performers) and at the Soka Festival in Aliso Viejo. In a surprisingly lovely twist of fate, each musician in Deep Stirrings is in the right place at the right time to fulfill a long-time goal of Alec's and we are heading into the recording studio! That's right; we will soon be recording our first album together! We are also preparing to shoot a music video, for our song "El Viaje."(The Journey)(OK. So, are y'all seeing the connection here? I hang out with some cool people at the beach and BAM I join a band and end up being part of a recording project AND a music video! Keep in mind; I have been in the band about a month! Neat people + me+right time = ART BOMB)What’s really funny about this is that I have known Alec for about 2 years through swing dance, historical dance, OCC and IVC concerts and we just NOW figured out we should be working together!Timing is everything! There are 5 of us in the band besides Alec: Marcus is insanely skilled on the electric guitar, and arranges many of our pieces, Chris is a master of the upright bass, Henry (also a versatile dancer in "Astra"- another nifty connection) plays keyboard with panache and subtlety, Dave is tuned into the djembe's tribal soul, and I get to create harmonies for Alec's soul-stirring songs.
(Get it? Deep Stirrings, soul-stirring? Yeah, that was for those of you who weren't paying attention!)In addition to all this, Alec and I discovered another facet to our shared love of dance- live drumming and dancing- and decided to expand our artistic collaboration on the dance floor by offering to perform at events. We bring the earthy bliss of his djembe playing and my tribal bellydance to gatherings in need of some Global Groove-yness. (SO if you or someone you know needs some fun ambiance or a full show, feel free to ask for info and if you know of any events/venues/festivals/causes looking for bands, we'd love to hear about that, too- let's keep the art love flowing! )I am also getting into modeling and voiceovers!!!!(Man, I am getting tired just writing all this..)To me, the concept of ART (in my case, dance and music) is really the expression of the magic of LIFE- the joys, pains, mysteries and discoveries... I have no doubt that much more is in store, and I feel so blessed. I want to give back all I'm receiving by sharing it all with you, in the hope that you will feel the "ripples" in your life. Inviting you into my crazybeautiful life is my way of saying "thank you" for the love and support you have given me, whether by emails, phone calls, or even coming to shows.I am so excited to be able to share this with ya! I hope you find some of the comfort, connection, wholeness and joy that I have.Stay posted for more wonderful adventures!!
LOVE and Blessings,
Sarah al Nour
P.S. Deep Stirrings will be jamming at the Neighborhood Cup in Aliso Viejo at 8 pm on June 27th. If you will be in the area, grab another cuppa tea and check us out!

Website: www.bellyssimadancer.com http://www.sarahbaxter.vpweb.com

P.P.S. To help make studio time and filming possible, we thought we'd offer some tempting rewards to the people who have been with us all along (collectively and individually), and to those who would like to become our groupies before everyone else!! If you feel inclined to support our journey, here's a short list of possibilities:~For $15: You will be guaranteed one album, signed by the band, from the first available batch created.~For $100: One album, plus a one hour living room concert by yours truly at your house, with whomever you'd like to invite in attendance.~For $500: 3 albums, a one hour living room concert by 3 to 6 of us, and dinner with the band plus you and a guest, at a local restaurant.(All other amounts gratefully accepted, obviously. I personally will deliver a hug for as little as a penny!)On behalf of the band, Slainte!!!(Cheers in Gaelic)

ASTRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A magical week of dance/sleep-deprivation/(and for some cast members) absinthe-induced delirium has at last concluded with a fabulous closing night and cast party. We danced our hearts out for ASTRA and the artistic satisfaction is high. We received marvelous reviews from people who attended the show, including a "Top Pick" rating by the LA Times! Yay us! I can hardly believe our first run has already closed! We have been working towards this for so long, and now I feel relieved and a little sad that is is over. However, we are constantly looking for appropriate new venues, and I am excited to begin work on the show again once we have our next booking, so am trying to take this time to re-focus, rest and re-connect with everyone since I have been pretty unavailable lately. (sorry about that...)
I am also using this time to really hone my dance technique, artistic expression, and some of my lesser-used skills ( like modeling and doing voiceover work on the side), and organize and establish a technical base for future work.
ALSO, I will be particpating in some local events: I will be singing with Alec Christopher Marken & Deep Stirrings at the Neighborhood Cup this Saturday. (www.myspace.com/deepstirrings He is still building the site, but there is a little video and some pics and audio clips already)
DETAILS: 4/11 Sat. 8pm-10:15pm The Neighborhood Cup - Aliso Viejo www.theneighborhoodcup.com

I will also be dancing at a book release party for local dancer and author DeAnna Cameron!! She has written a story about a Victorian woman who discovers bellydance.... can't wait to read it! DeAnna is a lovely person, and she is using this party to raise awareness and funds for the organization Women for Women, which offers assistance to women around the world.
These are some seriously amazing people I just love and respect to bits! PLEASE come support them!!
signing off for now,
Sarah

Voice Overs!!!

I am delving into the world of art and performance more deeply every day, and this is my latest endeavour... I have to upload a demo yet (help me, oh Techie-Friends, you're my only hope!), but hope to put all my theatrical/vocal training to good use on fun projects. Check it out!

Your next opportunity to experience this dance phenomenon is February 6th!! This class will give everyone a chance to meet me, too, so I hope to see you there!

Tribal Fusion Bellydance is an exciting new dance form that fuses world dances such as Flamenco, Indian and the folkloric dances of the near and Middle-East with a modern aesthetic. After a refreshing week in the land of liquid sunshine (AKA OREGON), I am ready to dig back into dancing! Classes at the YMCA begin in a week, so sign up soon!!
I will be rehearsing with the Astra von Berlifitzing Dance Co. in preparation for our upcoming show- so many exciting new chapters to explore!
Ban-dal will also be picking up steam as we have several events this year and want to excel... ah the smell of challenge is in the air!! mmmmm I can hardly wait to see what deliscious dancing delights await in 2009!!!

SHOPPING THAT GIVES BACK!

I don't know about you, but I really enjoy Christmas shopping (ok and most kinds of shopping...)
At this time of year, however, most stores are packed and people are frazzled. So why not skip the stress and shop online? Better yet, why not shop from stores that actually help people who are in need? When you shop from these sites (below), you can find plenty of fun gift ideas that contribute to a better life for the world around us! Shopping on World of Good on ebay causes a percentage of the final sale price to go to the charity of the seller's choice, and often offers eco-friendly goods as well, while the Greater Good Network has several different stores that feature fun, eco-friendly clothes, gifts, toys, jewelry, etc. that directly benefit people across the globe and in our own backyard- even the furry ones! If you don't want to shop or can't find anything you want to buy (!), you can also click to donate (it's free). Every click provides mammograms, food, books or other necessities to people (and animals) in need, and even preserves rainforest acreage. Why not go beyond gift-giving and really HELP? And you might even discover for yourself how much better it can be to give rather than receive.....

Hey all!
Well, my classes have been underway now for a while and are coming along nicely.
If you are curious to see what my class is like, feel free to drop in- it only costs $7/drop -in!!!!! Even though classes run on a 10 week system, you can come by anytime as every class begins with a fundamentals review, and anyone can jump in and have fun regardless of "level."
We meet Wednesdays, from 7:00-8:00 pm.
The classroom is huge and clean, well-lit with wood floors and mirrors- a great location. COME CHECK IT OUT!! You can sign up for the class during your first visit if you want to join. Right now we are focusing on basic/introductory movements, and are beginning to add some layering exercises and other drills to hone technique and stamina.
As always, I can provide performance opportunities for interested dancers.
Even though this class is technically ended (term is from 9/17/2008- 11/5/2008), we have added on some extra classes due to an extended break I took from teaching (due to family and health issues.)
Take advantage of these extra classes!
If you prefer to wait till the next term, (dates TBA), see my instruction page. Hope to see you and Happy Dancing!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!
I can hardly believe it is a new year already! 2008 was a rollercoaster ride, and I am full of hope for 2009.
With milestones like New Year's, resolutions fly thick and fast, because we catch our breath and reflect on (and learn from, ideally) the past and focus on our collective priorities for these days and weeks and months ahead.
If one of your desires for 2009 is to get strong, fit, flexible, and fabulous.. come dance!
If your focus is on developing your inner self... come dance!
If you want to make new friends or just have fun... come dance!!!
Are you ready to DANCE?!?!?!
January 7th, 7 p.m. Anaheim Family YMCA....
Be there!!!!

September 2008

What's new with moi???
OH so many things! To begin, the last month saw me jet-setting away to performances in exotic locales like Idyllwild and Tempe, Arizona. Ah, the highlife. Actually, I had the most fantastic time in both locations.
I am also now a commissioned choreographer- cool, eh? I have been requested to put together a nice little homage to Michael Jackson for Burger King, which has already provided WAAAY more amusement than I anticipated.
Several tribal events are coming up at which I will be performing with Ban-dal. I will also just be playing at some of them :) Oh the shopping! More info on which will be which coming soon.
I will also be performing solo at a new OC event: the Gypsy Groove Showcase in Foothill Ranch at 7 pm on October 4th. What will I perform? Come find out! There will be lots of other fantastic dancers as well, so come support your local dance community, ok?
More info soon!!

Settling in

Welcome to my blog!
This is my new blog home. I am unpacking all the dishes and picking out where all of the furniture is going to go, so pardon the dust! I am switching my blog here for now, since my website does not provide the blog opportunities I need, tribe keeps crashing, xanga is dead and myspace is blocked at work :) Keep your eyes on this space to get into the mind of a dance-mad Maenad!
